In Travels with Scout

Wednesday, June 20, 2018 – truck stop somewhere in Montana or Idaho, I’m not sure

Not knowing where I am is starting to feel normal. I wake up in a different place almost every day, drive 100 or 200 miles to a new place, stop for a while, and then drive some more. After a while, the exact location seems irrelevant.

One thing I know: I thought I loved mountains before but I love them even more now. Go to the mountains if you want cool, fresh air and plenty of quiet. Go to the mountains if you want to be alone. Go to the mountains if you want to be in nature.

And don’t worry about the name of the mountain

I am headed toward Canada with stops to visit friends in between. Canada sounds so far away and exotic to me, in spite of jokes about the politeness of its residents. After all, I grew up in Minnesota, which could easily be called Baja Canada. I should feel totally at home there.

I wanted to go all the way to the Arctic Circle (and beyond) but budget and road conditions got in the way, so I’m hoping I can spend a month and visit Vancouver, Calgary and the Canadian Rockies before it’s time to head back to the States.

There are so many places I want to see before my time on this planet is up.

  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Mexico
  • Costa Rica
  • Ecuador
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • Vietnam
  • China
  • Bhutan
  • India
  • Tibet
  • Egypt
  • South Africa
  • Kenya
  • Greece
  • Croatia
  • Italy
  • France
  • Spain/Portugal
  • England/Scotland/Ireland
  • Sweden/Norway/Finland/Denmark

You see where this is going. I want to go everywhere, see everything.

I should have started a long time ago.
