In Business, Complete Flakery

…is that I will flake out. And it kinda feels like that’s what’s happening — but I know that’s just fear talking.

What’s really happening is that I am overwhelmed, plus I haven’t been feeling well. Got a doctor’s appointment for the latter, but what to do about the former? All I can think is to tell you about it and hope that helps me sort things out.

  • The vocal coaching thing is scaring the shit out of me. I’m enjoying it, but I feel like I don’t know nearly enough and I’m frantically reading everything I can in order to get a handle on it.
  • What scares me even more is writing a sales page for vocal coaching, though I feel better since I found Sonia Simone’s 1-2-3-4 Formula for Great Sales Copy. I finally got started this morning and was able to think of some benefits, so I feel a little more confident now.
  • The amount of information I’m trying to cram in, both about voices and marketing, is too much. I’m stressing that I can’t remember enough, and I can’t seem to figure out how to capture everything in a way that will be easily accessible later. Dave Navarro highly recommended that I mind map my coaching sessions so I’ll try that, but it’s not intuitive for me and I don’t need any more learning curves, thank you. Anyone got good suggestions for this?
  • I got up in the middle of the night and wrote one word in my notebook in the dark: LIST. Which meant I need to write a list of priorities. Here’s the list I wrote when I got up:

Blog post [doing it now] Site -logo, about pg, sales pg, blog [nope, see below]*
Reply to comments [oops] Prepare for today’s coaching sessions [yep, but see below] Set up paypal [nope] Set up recording system for coaching sessions [nope]

How’s that for getting things done? Don’t say it. I seriously need some time management help.

  • I’m using Dave’s advice to look at my competitors’ sales pages for ideas for my own. That’s good and bad — good, because I’m getting good ideas; bad, because I’m seeing exactly how much I have to learn. But that’s good too, because now I have a direction: UP.
  • Because I wasn’t feeling well for the last few days, I asked Dave to give me more time to get the site ready for voice-type visitors before he blogs about our session. He graciously told me he would wait until I was 100% ready, which relieves a lot of pressure.
  • *I also told him about the domain decision, and he said he was concerned I would lose money if I kept the voice coaching stuff here. And truthfully, I’d been in mind-changing mode already but afraid to blog about it. How many changes can you take before you get sick of me? It’s that old ‘flake fear’ again, but I have to be honest: I changed my mind. Again. You can’t say you weren’t warned about my flakiness!
  • So the vocal coaching site is Speak Clearly Online — nothing there yet but the theme. I’m working on it and hope to have it ready in another week.

**I had to reschedule two voice coaching sessions today because I wasn’t well enough, and one this Friday because that was the only time my doc could squeeze me in. I have three more sessions set for tomorrow, and I hope I’m up to it. These are all free sessions I offered to Dave’s Group Mentorship forum. I was bowled over by the positive response when he mentioned it in his newsletter.

Someone asked me how I like voice coaching so far, and I said it’s like making friends for a living. Well, it will when I start getting paid for it. That’s the tricky part!

Hang in there and keep plugging along (cliches, I know – but that's the best advice I can offer). You'll get through this and things will be better. Such exciting times! I know the overwhelm feeling and – being a bit flaky myself – I can totally relate to it all. Things will get better soon as you start moving through your list of things.

Sounds like you need a coaching session of your own! Here's what I know, I call it my 95% rule…ready 95% of the folks around are average in their knowledge on any given subject. That only leaves 5% of us who actually sit and learn all the stuff. There are some pretty scary statistics out there on the number of books actually purchased that are NOT for gifts. And the number of books people read in a year…worst. So you probably know wayyyyyy more than anyone you would be working with. And, there are times when we don't have an answer for something, so you say “good question (or whatever) I'm gonna do a little research and get back to you on that”. I've been known to read 10 books in a month, non-fiction and I still don't have all the answers. You just need a little clarity and strategizing, more than I could do in a comment but shoot Alexia an email and I guarantee you won't be sorry!

You're so right. There's nothing like taking action for making things
better. My big problem has been that I haven't been able to prioritize
plus, let's face it, there's too freaking much GREAT information out
there. I keep getting pulled away from my list. But I already have
enough information to do what I need to do. Gotta stop learning and
    start doing.

    p.s. I love your handle!

Perhaps you need to break down your tasks even more LaVonne. I remember reading somewhere, I think it was Dave Navarro actually, that you don't have to work at 100% all the time. Even 5% can keep you moving forward towards your goal, and it's better than setting yourself a huge target and then missing it.

For example, limit your sessions to one per day; this is especially true while they are free. it will help build your confidence and stamina, and stop what's already happening, the I-hope-I-can-get-through-this feeling.

Remember what Catherine said a few posts ago; you have to train yourself to write, which she did, in small steps. If you only get three things done one day, so what? You're three steps nearer your goal; much better than having a to do list that you haven't completed at all.

Very good points, Jane, thank you. I thought I was limiting the voice coaching sessions enough by only having two hours per day available, but that potentially could mean four sessions a day. And they all seemed to want tomorrow for some reason! But I'm not nearly as stressed about that as I am about writing sales copy. I don't know why but I'm flummoxed! Love that word. 🙂
