There are no magic beans

… maybe you get just normal beans
… maybe you get a murderous giant
… you don’t get to choose…
… unless you just buy normal beans to start with.

Slow and steady wins the race

… exponential growth is astonishingly powerful
… consistent, continual improvements add up
… it’s easier to turn gently than to change direction fast
… you never know when the fruit are going to appear

Grow healthy food

… you can’t buy a good night’s sleep
… no plant is perfect
… rottenness spreads, don’t encourage it
… if you don’t believe in your fruit, why should anyone else?

You get to choose how you tend your garden

… gardening is a series of chores
… you may not know how to do all of them
… you don’t HAVE to do all of them
… once they’re routine, they’re no longer chores

Be excellent to each other

… help people as much as you can
… pay it forward
… be generous with your excess
… make friends: you can never have too many

Spread your leaves and bask in sunshine

… there is no such thing as too many friends
… you can’t make luck – you can only be open to it
… you never know where opportunity will come from
… when the right opportunity comes, grab it with both hands

It’s bloody hard work

… you will have to do most of it yourself
… and/or pay people to do it
… and much of it will prove to be wasted
… so do something you love

    This poem by Rumi seemed appropriate if you consider your work in the world ‘your beloved.’

    My Beloved grows right out of my own heart, how much more union can there be.
