In Blog Basics, Get Your (Blog) Shit Together, Video

Time for another tutorial! Today, we learn how to install a WordPress theme and a plugin:

Resources mentioned in the video:

Steps

To install a theme:

  1. In the Admin sidebar, go to Appearance > Themes.
  2. Click the Install Themes tab.
  3. If you’ve already downloaded a theme, click the Upload link and upload the theme.
  4. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  5. Or use the Search function to find a theme:
  6. When you find one that you like, click Install, then Install Now, then Activate.
  7. Done!

To install a plugin:

  1. Click Plugins in the admin sidebar, then Add New.
  2. If you’ve downloaded a plugin, you can upload it the same way you can upload a theme.
  3. Or you can search for a keyword, such as “contact”, or click on the links, Featured, Popular, Newest or Recently Updated.
  4. When you find a plugin that you want, click Install, then Activate.
  5. Depending on the plugin, you may need to choose some settings for it.
If so, look for a Settings link under the plugin in the list or look for the name of the plugin under Settings in the sidebar. If you need instructions and can’t find them (it happens, sorry to say) click the “Visit Plugin Site” link under the plugin in the list of plugins. Instructions can usually be found there. If you can’t find any, shoot me a comment below and I’ll take a look.

If you have questions or problems, let me know in the comments below or at the #GYBST hashtag on Twitter.

And have fun playing with your blog!
