I am quite the Scrooge about this holiday. I may end up like poor old Ebenezer, but I always wind up enjoying it anyway, eventually — as he did, now that I think about it.
What I hate about Christmas is all the effort and money one is expected to put into it. I’m lazy, did I mention that? I am also stingy. I don’t like having to figure out what to give people and then going through the hassle and expense of buying and wrapping it (why does the wrapping often cost more than the gift nowadays?)
I am not a Christian any more, so I could swear the whole thing off, but family trumps beliefs — and besides, I like the actual day. I like getting together with the kids and the grandkids and the greats. I like the smell of the tree, and the glitter, and the smiles on everyone’s faces. I like the food (although it often doesn’t like me). And yes, I like getting presents.
So I guess it’s worth going through a bit of hassle and spending a bit of money to get to the good part.
Merry Christmas to you, and if you don’t celebrate it — well, Happy Holidays. It really can be the most wonderful time of the year.
We stopped celebrating Christmas. I miss parts of it but am relieved to let go of other parts. Like much of life.
Thanks, Linda — it’s nice to know I’m not alone, but I did have a nice time with family yesterday. And I got the best Christmas present ever: a tank of gas!
Just wanted to say Seasons Greetings! Reading along as I’ve just found your web page. Living in Alaska, I have camped and enjoyed cabin live for many years. Thinking of up-grading to something with wheels. Thank you for sharing your adventures online. Have a great New Years!
