I’m (carefully) jumping for joy because I’ve just landed a spot as a camp host for the summer in one of the most beautiful spots in the country, Inyo National Forest near Mammoth Lakes, California, and the oldest trees in the world.
This is a new thing for me, and I’m a little nervous about the physical stamina it will take, at least in the beginning while I get used to the 7200 ft. elevation. I am overweight, out of shape, and no spring chicken, but I figure three months of maintaining 27 campsites, as well as daily hikes and days’ off activities like fishing, kayaking, and who-knows-what, should lead to a much fitter, stronger body by autumn.
But I need to start slow
This morning, I stupidly picked up a very heavy, old TV set and strained a muscle that is not at all happy with me. When I stand up, I creak and groan like a woman twenty years older. It’s temporary and I’m taking care of myself, but it’s a good reminder not to be stupid. I can do almost anything as long as I take it slow and work up to it — but lifting heavy objects at my age is just plain stupid. Gotta remember that when I start work.
The Minaret Falls campground opens in mid-June and runs through September. Get out your sleeping bag and come camping with me — I’d love to meet you!
