In Love Your Customers

How do you define the word ‘client’?

Perhaps you think of someone who pays you for a good or service. Perhaps your definition includes a mutually beneficial relationship, or a transfer of knowledge and advice from you to someone else.

Allow me to present the definition from the Oxford English Dictionary: “ One who is under the protection or patronage of another, a dependant.”

Are your customers your clients? Do they depend on you to guide and protect them? If you weren’t there, what would they do?

Every day I hear entrepreneurs fret about promoting themselves. I’ve even been guilty of it myself at times. Everything in our culture seems to punish the person who promotes themselves, and we’re trained from an early age not to toot our own horns.

But you’re here this month to love your customers.

You’re here to offer them something that makes their lives better. Who are you not to tell them about your offering? If you keep your awesomeness to yourself, you’re depriving your clients of your protection and patronage. You’re intentionally leaving them to the wilds of the market and the mercies of whomever might come along and scoop them up.

If you truly believe that you are the best person to help your clients, then you’re obligated to tell them what you can offer.

    We can give people the benefits of our contacts, our unique perspective, and understanding of the Universe.

    How? Hmmm… still working on that one.

    Spreading the news via blogpost, Roving Robin, Tweet, word of mouth, and putting the news out in wonderful groups like this one are the first thoughts.

      It’s always how that’s the catch, isn’t it? I’m going with blogs and guest posts, primarily, and working in Twitter and JV as the opportunities present themselves.

      But, you know, I think the question ‘How?’ is really more ‘How do I do it without feeling/looking foolish/stupid/overconfident/etc?’ And maybe it’s symptomatic of a lack of confidence on our parts, that our work can truly change people’s lives. And if we’re not confident in our own work, we’re not going to attract others. My answer to that? Get out and start doing, and working with people, and changing lives. Then tell others how awesome what you have to offer truly is. 🙂
