In Interviews

She calls herself a “purveyor of mad, obsessive projects,” but Kirsty Hall is more than that. She’s an artist, a businesswoman, a mum, and a very funny, fascinating lady. Kirsty talked about:

  • Budgeting our time as entrepreneurs while coping with limits
  • Her recent course, “With Limits,” with Tara Swiger from Blonde Chicken and Crafting A Business
  • Kirsty’s latest #customerlove service, answering questions in her tiara
  • Why giving away free stuff can make your prospective customers uncomfortable
  • And why she’s been sewing sequins on an apron for a year-and-a-half

But we started our conversation talking about how she manages to do her work while suffering from a debilitating illness:

Nice work ladies. Great to get to know you a better Kirsty. I just subscribed to your list yesterday btw.

I like hearing how you live within your physical limits and how to best deal with that and run a business at the same time. I dont’ have limits like that, but I care for someone who does, and it limits me. That “getting over the bathtub to have a shower” thing is something I deal with every day. (We’re building a walk-in shower in January.)

I can also relate to the “giving it away is easier than charging for it” mindset. It took me awhile to get over that, and it still feels weird, if I’m honest. But when people like and trust you, they will want to buy. It’s just like going to a store you like and saying, “Hey, when the do-dad you sell is available in green, give me a call.”

    Love your artwork too, Kirsty!

Thanks so much, Marlene. You’re absolutely right – being a carer is almost as limiting and frustrating as having a condition yourself.

I have noticed that I am evolving out of that Volunteer Junkie mindset, although I can’t imagine that I’ll ever become an ‘all about the money’ type, I would like to find a nourishing and sustainable balance.

Fun interview! I loved getting to hear the two of you chatting.

Especially timely, too, given that I’m in the midst of dealing with my own temporary set of physical limits, post knee surgery. Geez, getting a shower is a HUGE accomplishment these days!

You’re an inspiration, Kirsty! (And I’m so delighted you’re part of the Thriving Artists Project :))

Thanks Melissa, I’m thrilled to be part of the Thriving Artists Project too, even though I’m not entirely thriving yet 🙂
